How to Hang a Garage Door Opener From a High Ceiling

August 5, 2016

Normal garage door openers arrive with parts for hanging the engine out of 8-foot-high ceilings. The parts consist of the angle-iron cross member which mounts at the ceiling along with a set of straps as vertical supports. For higher ceilings, the system has to be upgraded to provide extra support which prevents the engine from moving from side to side. You may hang an opener from a higher ceiling and brace it for lateral support with angle iron which you find at hardware stores and steel provide outlets. The job requires some mechanical skills, a few hand tools as well as the ability to work on a ladder.

Installing the Cross Member

Determine the place of the cross member which installs at the ceiling over the motor. Attach 1 end of the opener rail at the front of the motor. Attach the wall mount for the railing at the outer end of the railing. Measure the total span from the outer surface of the bracket to the provided anchoring holes to the top of the motor. Close the garage door and measure this same distance from the inside face of the door, and mark the garage floor at this time.

Mark the center of the doorway from side to side. Measure the distance each way from the markers to the seams at the sides of the garage. Use these measurements to ascertain the place of the engine from side to side in the garage, and mark the Landscaping design Boise, ID accordingly.

Position a tall stepladder near the markers on the Landscaping design San Diego. Work from the ladder and hang a plumb bob or chalk line from the ceiling. Fix it in either direction, as necessary, so the bob hangs directly at your mark, and mark this point on the Landscaping cost San Diego as the center of the cross member.

Measure and mark a piece of 13/4-inch-by-13/4-inch-by-1/8-inch galvanized angle iron 36 inches long. This is going to be the cross member. Cut the slice at the mark using a hacksaw. Mark the center of the penis in the end to end for reference.

Position the cross member against the ceiling so it’s parallel with the surface of the garage door and align the center at the markers on the Landscaping design Fort Lauderdale, FL. Double-check the dimensions from the surface of the doorway to each end of the penis to be certain it’s just parallel with the surface of the door. Use a stud finder to locate and mark the locations of ceiling joists that intersect with the member.

Establish a power drill or cordless drill with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Drill pilot holes for lag bolts at every one of the joist marks on the Landscaping cost Redding. Attach the top side of the member at the Landscaping rocks Redding by driving 1/4-inch-by-3-inch lag bolts at each pilot hole, with a socket and ratchet.

Vertical Supports and Braces

Position the stepladder under the center of the cross member using the rungs parallel to the surface of the door. Check with the center mark of the doorway from side to side. Attach the rail mount at the surface of the wall over the door along with the prescribed height, using the provided lag bolts.

Place the motor on one of the rungs that corresponds with the height of the rail bracket. Utilizing a 4-foot level for a guide, raise the engine so that the railing is just level, and encourage the engine on the rung using wooden blocks.

Measure the vertical distance from the top surface of the cross member that’s attached at the bottom into the anchoring holes at each side of the engine. Cut two pieces of angle iron that span as supports.

Attach 1 end of each support at the corresponding hexagonal holes, using 1/4-inch-by-1-inch machine nuts and bolts at each attachment. Position the top ends of the supports against the surface of the cross member and align the holes in each. Attach the top ends at the penis with nuts and bolts.

Measure the distance from the outer end of the cross member to the lower end of the corresponding support and cut two angle-iron braces to span.

Attach the top and lower ends of the braces at the cross member and each hold, using 1/4-inch-by-1-inch machine nuts and bolts. Tighten all bolted connections securely. Remove the wooden blocks which support the motor at the rung of the ladder and finish the setup of the board.
