How To Lay Bricks Like A Bricklayer

August 14, 2018

Laying bricks is not a difficult process, especially when you know how to do it. There are some simple steps that concrete Anchorage experts follow that can also help you do it on your own. In terms of the tools, the ones that you use in concrete projects will come in handy. With the right tools, your work will be very easy.

Step 1

Form a guide for laying bricks with a mason line. After that, you can start laying the bricks. The mason line is important to keep the bricks in straight lines. You will have two mason blocks and a slot to keep the line in place. Set two bricks on both ends of the line and then pull the line tight. The rest can follow in this line.

Step 2

Guiding the bricks is the next course of action. You will need a story pole to guide how you lay the bricks. You can use a strip of wood for this. Mark the appropriate height of the bricks with a pencil. Also, mark the mortar joints.

Step 3

Have a spade trowel and supply a good amount of mortar on the bricklayers. You must have a respirator or a mask on, complete with gloves for your own safety. Spread the mortar on either side of the bricks. Carefully knock the bricks in place so that bubbles that might be underneath the mortar are released.

Step 4

With the sharp side of your trowel, scrape the excess mortar off the joints. There will be some debris when you are done with this. Use a brush to clear it off. Holding the trowel at 30 degrees, create lines between the mortar and the bricks. The importance of these small lines is to make sure that the resulting brick wall is not affected by precipitation.

Step 5

Most of the time, you will need smaller bricks towards the end of the walls. For this reason, you have to cut them into the appropriate size. With concrete contractors Anchorage, you are able to get quality results while at it. Before you cut any bricks, you must protect them from the resulting shock. Set the bricks on some dirt or a bed of sand.

Set the sharp section of your brick chisel along the line that you want to cut. With a hammer, tap the other end and create lines where you will cut the brick. These will guide you accordingly. After you have the lines set, hold your chisel on any of the lines. Angle the chisel to the side that you will be using on your wall. Use a hammer to hit the chisel carefully. With the right force, the brick should split into two.

As you can see, this is not a very difficult process. However, if you do not have the right tools or you don’t know what you are doing, you may struggle. If you are unaware of how to go about it, you should get in touch with Anchorage concrete professionals.
