How to Replace Fireplace Screens

May 8, 2022

Fireplace screens are designed to help prevent sparks from popping from the firebox and into the room. A fireplace screen is much like a pair of drapes to the fireplace, in that they’re stored off to the side, however when in use, they are pulled toward the middle. If your fireplace screen is damaged and in need of replacing, then it is possible to replace fireplace displays in a few minutes with some basic hand tools.

Open the damaged display of the fireplace, and clean any loose soot from the region across the display rod mounts only inside the upper faceplate of the fireplace using a shop vacuum and a brush attachment.

Put on a pair of latex gloves and prepare a solution of TSP at a bucket of water as per the instructions on the box of TSP. Then scrub the display rod mounts using a stiff-bristled nylon scrub brush to remove too much soot from the mounts as you can.

Spray a light layer of penetrating oil to each of the display rod mounts. Then loosen the screws holding the brackets to the sides of the fireplace using a screwdriver, and remove the rod with the displays.

Slide the display rings off of the rod. Clean the rod thoroughly using the TSP alternative.

Slide the display rings of a new set of fireplace screens onto the rod, and reinsert the rod into the fireplace. Expand the mounts, and reattach the mounts using the mounting screws using a screwdriver. Check the operation of the displays to realize that they open and close smoothly and completely.
