My Touches With Cottage Flair in Canada

August 19, 2019

Having house envy was a good thing for Jonathan Greenland, who moved to a former coworker’s house after long admiring its custom millwork. Jonathan and his wife, Tammy, infused the traditional-style house — put on a Newfoundland oceanside bluff — with their personal relaxed cottage style. An expansive family-friendly basement having a home theatre and wine basement features plenty of room for their three sons to play.

The great room is one of the couple’s favorite places, but its large vaulted ceilings left creating a comfy feeling challenging. The couple moved with a sea-inspired wall paint and added custom built-in shelving round the fireplace. A black TV unit was replaced by the brand new built-ins.

Tammy’s sister and brother-in-law made the rustic coffee table with wood and nails from their family’s 100-year-old barn.

The beach rock tile, seashell styled artwork, wainscoting and curated accessories play up the couple’s beach-cottage style. In repeating celebrity accessories throughout the 9, Tammy put.

The existing kitchen had good bones, but the Greenlands needed more counter space and functioned with Shiann Hynes of Granite Counters to renovate. They painted the existing cabinets and added a island, a farmhouse sink and a dedicated coffee station. “The largest change in renovating was the accession of the huge island. It is a homework station, dinner and prep area, and great for entertaining,” says Tammy. The doorway on the right leads to the backyard.

The new extended island provides a lot of counter space for food preparation and casual dining.

The Greenlands utilize their java station every morning and indulge in specialty coffees following dinner.

Rather than using standard glass on this cupboard, they opted for chicken wire to play from the dish collection.

The formal dining room has an elegant rustic style, with an antique buffet from St. John’s and fabric-covered slippered seats. The red and black dining chairs provide a stunning contrast against the white wainscoting.

A distressed armoire near the entry holds winter coats. The wicker baskets on top store the household’s hats and gloves.

In 5-year-old Aidan’s room, the superstar theme continues with a red, white and blue colour palette. Clean white walls, wainscoting and a chair rail contrast with a mattress painted the same red as the dining room seats.

Stars are present in the charming master bedroom, too. The couple intends to handle another upstairs bedrooms alongside their renovation to-do list.

A 1,500-square-foot basement carries the downstairs, such as a house theater with a custom built-in encompassing a massive TV. Speakers hide behind mesh-front doors. Theater-inspired sconces line both sides of the space, and there’s a bite area with a microwave and fridge. “We really enjoy watching films as a family; this is definitely the kids’ and their friends’ favorite region of the house,” says Tammy.

For those grown-ups, this arched wood doorway contributes to a wine cellar built from the previous homeowner.

The curved ceiling depth is a nice touch in this compact space. Brick task light illuminates the multiple wine racks.

Jonathan, Ashton, Tammy, Aidan and Aaron enjoy a while in the great room.
