When to Plant Bulbs at a Greenhouse

April 20, 2022

Planting bulbs in a greenhouse makes sense, especially in the event that you like making floral arrangements or intend to sell the flowers you develop. Greenhouse-grown flowers grow taller, blossom sooner and possess fewer imperfections than those grown outdoors. A greenhouse offers flowers protection from wind, rain and insects. The ecological conditions inside the greenhouse are under the control, so that you may offer the specific conditions that the lights need for optimum performance.

Spring

Spring is a good time to plant bulbs in a greenhouse because it provides you a jump-start over the growing season. Bulbs planted in peat pots are easy to transplant in the garden once they are going to blossom. Plant crocosmia (Crocosmia spp.) , peacock orchid (Acidanthera), iris (Iris spp.) in early March. Succession plantings throughout the end of May will ensure blooms throughout the summer. Most greenhouse-grown bulbs blossom six to eight weeks following planting, under perfect conditions.

Summer

The warmer temperatures inside a greenhouse during the summer create the right atmosphere for many different heat-loving tropical bulbs, like elephant ears (Alocasia spp.) , canna lilies (Canna spp.) , pineapple lily (Eucomis spp.) , dahlia (Dahlia spp.) and gladiolus (Gladiolus spp.) . Begin planting these bulbs in early June and continue planting them each three or four days until the beginning of August for continual blooms in to autumn.

Fall

Fall is a busy time in the greenhouse. Bulbs which are beyond their prime are best removed today and saved so there’s room to plant new bulbs. Windflowers (Anemone spp.) , cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) and gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) would be best planted in September. In October, plant Dutch iris (Iris x hollandica). November bulbs to plant in the greenhouse include peacock orchid, windflowers, iris, amaryllis (Amaryllis spp.) , paperwhites (Narcissus tazetta) and triplet lilies (Triteleia spp.) .

Winter

Planting bulbs in the greenhouse over the winter is a good reason to play in the dirt and also is a fantastic way to ensure you have flowers in blossom for Valentine’s Day. In December plant iris, triplet lilies, windflowers, Persian buttercups (Ranunculus spp.) , calla lilies (Zantedeschia spp.) and freesia (Freesia spp.) . In January, plant crocosmia, iris, windflowers, daffodils (Narcissus spp.) , tulip (Tulipa spp.) , hyacinth (Hyacinthus spp.) and triplet lilies. February bulbs to plant in a greenhouse comprise peacock orchid, anemone, crocosmia, iris, lilies (Lilium spp.) and triplet lilies.
